OASAS Evaluations

This service performs assessments for potential chemical dependence to alcohol, prescription medications or illicit drugs as it pertains to DUI, DWI or arrest for drug possession based on the standards of the New York State Office of Addiction Services And Supports (OASAS).

The OASAS evaluation will be conducted by a Board-Certified physician who is also OASAS Certified. Testing is available in both English and Spanish formats with available Spanish interpreters and will include several standardized screening tools for alcohol and drug addiction, including SASSI (Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory), Simple Screening Instrument for Alcohol and Other Drugs (SSI-AOD) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5).

In addition, the candidate will be interviewed to determine their lifestyle and their psychological state to help determine if they truly have a substance addiction or not. Urine toxicology screening will be limited to the testing of substances based on the arrest record. Character references provided by the candidate will be contacted to discuss the candidate’s social history, employment history and other appropriate history prior to compiling a detailed report for the court. Medical insurances are not accepted for this evaluation.

Those candidates who the court determines require referral for substance abuse counseling and treatment will be placed in a program within 48 hours if standards of that program are met. Services are conducted in a private, comfortable setting.
